Know Your Style, Know Yourself
If I was to be asked on the spot; “who are you” I would be frozen, gobsmacked, because frankly, I wouldn't be able to conjure words up to tell you who I really was. Finding or knowing yourself is an incredibly hard code to crack.
Here’s some help.
Being ashamed to “fly your freak flag”, plays in hand with the increasingly freaky thought of not knowing yourself and the effect it can have on your well being.
From my experience, it's possible to find yourself through your style.
Putting a label on what my style is, is something I’ve struggled with for some time now (a reference to my God-awful description of it in the “The Team” section), as people tend to place me in a box when I express it and I violently refuse to be locked into one thing.
My style is affected by weather, location and feeling- I simply wear or buy what I want. Rather than consciously hunting for specific attributes in clothing, I’d like to believe they find me (yup, really cringe).
Being true to yourself and not allowing anyone to put you down is an enormous step into knowing what your style is, and in turn knowing who you are.
This is not in anyway an easy step to take, but coming to terms with that will help you make that move.
Honestly, your style can be a gateway to things you never really thought you could do or be (call me out if I'm reaching here x ): from something as little as wearing heels or boots to an event you know everyone will be wearing trainers at, or to speaking your mind undoubtedly when the opportunity arises.
To be candid, I'm a pretty shy person - That is when I'm sober :), but when I meet people, they never seem to see that or think that mainly because of my choice of dress and the immense confidence that it brings.
However, to say one isn't influenced by others would be - excuse my french- absolute bull crap, as it is almost innate to see things, like it and if you can afford it: buy it. I do it! She does it! Your mama does it, and so do you whether or not you believe that.
I think it's a positive thing to be influenced, because without that factor creativity would be stunted, as we need to take things, flip it and reverse it (word to Missy Elliot). So don’t ever for one second believe you’re not being true to yourself by taking a concept and making it authentically yours.
From all my rambling, what I'm trying so effortlessly to say is: You do you boo.
Everything is Love
